This
year’s commencement speaker was Dr. David Eubanks, President, Johnson Bible
College, Knoxville, Tennessee. Speaking on the great Biblical message of
endurance, he shared many success stories that came through many failures,
encouraging each one, graduates and audience alike, to persevere. Dr. Eubanks
has served Johnson Bible College as its President for over 38 years and is
retiring in June, six months shy of being the longest serving current college
president in America.
David and his wife, Margaret,
were honored with The James A. Garfield Award during the commencement service.
This is the highest award given by Emmanuel in recognition of
outstanding service to the church of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
The award is named for
our nation’s twentieth President, James A. Garfield, the only preacher ever to
become President of the United States. President Garfield was a
dedicated Christian preacher who served in the nineteenth century among the
churches that grew out of the Stone-Campbell Movement.
Magnificent Facsimile of Biblical Codex Given
to Emmanuel
In 1999 the
Vatican issued the most faithful facsimile ever produced of the single most
important biblical manuscript in existence: the famous Codex Vaticanus B. The
original manuscript, copied sometime in the mid-4th century, contained the
entire Bible in Greek, along with the Apocrypha. It has resided in the Vatican
since at least 1483, having lost portions of both the Old Testament and New
Testament texts in its travels.
The new
facsimile reproduces each page of the manuscript in color and in its current
size and condition, including the appearance of blemishes, such as small holes
and tears. It was issued in an edition of only 450 copies, in a parchment-bound
volume of 1536 pages, accompanied by a parchment-and-leather-bound introductory
volume. The publication, which comes in a specially-fitted plexiglass case,
sells for $6,200. Friends of Emmanuel, who wish to remain anonymous, made a
designated gift to the school for the purchase of the facsimile and a secure
display case. Dr. Charles R. Taber, Professor Emeritus of World Mission, has
produced an expert translation of the French portions of the introductory
volume, which Emmanuel will make available to interested persons. This "instant
rare book" is a stunning addition to Emmanuel’s collection of materials for
studying the physical origins and transmission of the biblical text. Many thanks
to the generous contributors of this amazing reproduction.
The donors
requested the Codex be dedicated to
Dean, Robert
F. Hull, Jr.,
Scholar, Teacher, Man of God.
Emmanuel is
grateful for the gift and honored to recognize Dean Hull.
Renewing God's Call:
A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
Emmanuel School of Religion’s Institute for Excellence in Ministry is
pleased to sponsor "Renewing God’s Call: A Pastoral Pilgrimage to the Holy
Land." This pastoral renewal experience is funded and made possible due to a
generous grant to Emmanuel School of Religion from the CF Foundation, Inc.
The program allowed
twenty mid-career pastors to participate in a two-week pilgrimage to the Holy
Land in February 2007. Visits were made to sites in Galilee (six days) and Jerusalem (seven
days) in the mornings, then focused on rest, reflection on the attendees pastoral call,
and renewal in the afternoons.
The Pilgrims who were selected for the February 2007
trip enjoyed a Pre-Pilgrimage Retreat in January 2007 at Roan Mountain State
Park in lovely Eastern Tennessee. After the Pilgrimage concludes, the group will
convene for a Post-Pilgrimage Retreat in March.
2008 Renewing
God's Call: A Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
This year's pilgrimage will begin accepting applications on September 3,
2007 and will close October 1, 2007. Details for the 2008 trip will be available on the
Pastoral Pilgrimage web site
starting September 3, 2007. Pastors who have at
least five years experience in the ministry, are 35-55 years of age, and are
physically able to make the trip will be welcome to apply.
