Michael L.
Sweeney
Assistant Professor of World
Mission and New Testament
Mike Sweeney and his wife Linda
first arrived on Emmanuel’s campus in the Fall of 1982. They had
bicycled from Oregon to the East coast and back in to Johnson
City. Mike completed his M.Div. studies at Emmanuel in 1985.
While at Emmanuel, Mike took a class from Dr. Charles Taber on
Bible Translation. Through that class and Dr. Taber’s
encouragement, Mike made contact with
Pioneer Bible Translators and decided to go on for a Ph.D. in
biblical studies to prepare to join PBT as a translation
consultant. He completed his doctoral studies at Union Theological
Seminary in Virginia in 1989 and went on to pursue further
graduate studies in linguistics at the University of Texas in
Arlington.
From 1991 to 2006 the Sweeneys worked in Papua New Guinea. Mike
served as the primary translator in the Mum translation, and
worked as a consultant for the other PBT translation projects
there. In addition, the United Bible Societies named Mike as an
Honorary Translation Advisor and called upon him to teach
workshops as well as do consultant checking for some of their
projects and present papers at their Triennial Translation
Workshops. Mike also worked closely with the Summer Institute of
Linguistics in Papua New Guinea.
Mike and Linda have two boys, Christopher and Ryan. Mike enjoys
playing trumpet and guitar, tinkering with ham radio and solar
energy, and staying fit at a local gym.
