Bruce E. Shields
Russell
F. and Marian J. Blowers Professor of Christian Ministries,
Emeritus
Bruce Shields is
Russell F. and Marian J. Blowers Professor of Christian Ministries at Emmanuel. He
began teaching here in 1983, but was no stranger in East
Tennessee, having graduated from Milligan College and having
ministered with two churches in the area.
While a student in
Germany, he served for five years as German-speaking minister of
the Christliche Gemeinde (Christian Congregation) in Tübingen. He
also ministered for twelve years with churches in Pennsylvania and
taught speech at Eastern Christian College and New Testament at
Lincoln Christian Seminary. At Emmanuel he brings together his
interest and education in the areas of preaching, worship, and
biblical studies to help students to exegete New Testament and Old
Testament texts, to develop sermons based solidly on those texts,
and to express those sermons effectively to their hearers in the
context of Christian worship. This kind of teaching helps to
achieve Emmanuel’s purpose “to prepare men and women for
effective ministry.”
Dr. Shields is a
member of the Academy of
Homiletics. He often makes presentations
to the annual meetings of the academy and reviews German works on
homiletics for its journal, Homiletic. He is also a member
of Societas
Homiletica, the Society of Biblical Literature and the
Frederick B. Neumann Symposium on Theological Interpretation of
Scripture. His commentary on Romans was published by Standard
Publishing Company in 1989. Academic articles have appeared in Restoration
Quarterly, Homiletic, Theological Education, Oral Tradition,
and The Journal of Christian Studies. During the summer of
1991 he participated in a summer seminar on The Oral Tradition in
Literature, sponsored by the National Endowment for the
Humanities. His book, From the Housetops:
Preaching in the Early Church and Today, was published in 2000
by Chalice Press. His book, Preaching Romans, will be
published in 2004 by Chalice Press His next project is a book on
the history of Christian worship to be published by College Press. Dr.
Shields often preaches for churches in various parts of the
country.
He and his wife
Rosemarie have three adult children and two grandchildren.
