Rollin A. Ramsaran

Professor of New Testament

Born in Trinidad and reared in California, Rollin Ramsaran lived in the Boston area for several years before joining the Emmanuel faculty in 1994.

Dr. Ramsaran’s academic work focuses especially on the moral teaching and reasoning of the apostle Paul and on the role of Jesus in the emergence of the first-century churches. He sees studies in these areas as a foundation for church renewal in our time and for realizing the power of the gospel in contemporary society. He has a special interest in Greco-Roman sociology, literature, and rhetoric as important sources of insight for interpreting the New Testament writings.

Professor Ramsaran holds the Ph.D. in New Testament and Christian Origins from Boston University. He is also a graduate of Pacific Christian College (B.A.) and Fuller Theological Seminary in conjunction with Westwood Christian Foundation (M.A.).

He is active in the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion. He is the author of Liberating Words: Paul’s Use of Rhetorical Maxims in I Corinthians 1–10. In addition, he has written articles in Catholic Biblical Quarterly and Leaven, and reviews in, among others, Journal of Biblical Literature, Journal of the American Academy of Religion, and Second Century.

Before coming to Emmanuel, Dr. Ramsaran held the posts of Lecturer in Religious Studies at Boston University and Instructor at the University of Massachusetts at Boston. Dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in classroom teaching, he was selected to participate in the 1993–94 Northeastern AAR/Lilly Teaching Workshop in Religion.

An avid baseball and softball fan, Rollin also enjoys running, basketball, and racquetball. He and his wife Michelle have two children, Joshua and Ariana.
