Calvin L. Phillips
Lecturer in Christian Ministries

Calvin L. Phillips’ ten-year term as President of Emmanuel School of Religion was a time when the seminary grew and strengthened itself dramatically. Following his presidency Dr. Phillips served as Chancellor of Emmanuel School of Religion for 12 years. Prior to coming to Emmanuel he had served thirty-four years as Senior Minister with the South Side Christian Church of Hammond, later Munster, Indiana. In this ministry he came to be widely known as a thoughtful and stimulating preacher, an earnest evangelist, a loving pastor, and an effective administrator. He also held various positions of leadership in the Chicago District Evangelistic Association, Lake Region Christian Assembly, the Christian Service Center of Chicago, and was for many years editor of the Evangel, a monthly newsletter of Chicagoland churches. He was president of the North American Christian Convention in 1981.

His convictions about the need for high quality leadership in the ministry of the churches prompted him to become a Founder, Associate, and Trustee of Emmanuel, long before becoming its President. He is quick to say that his commitment is to the church, the body of Christ, and he looks upon his work at Emmanuel as an embodiment of this commitment. His extensive pastoral experience makes him an extraordinarily helpful teacher in Christian Ministries classes.

Dr. Phillips received the B.A. and M.A. degrees from Cincinnati Bible Seminary and the B.D. degree from Butler University. The Doctor of Divinity degree was conferred upon him by Milligan College in 1981, and he earned the Doctor of Ministry degree from Christian Theological Seminary in 1984.

Dr. Phillips’ lovely wife Sally is a strong complement to his ministry.
