Frederick W. Norris
Professor of World Christianity Emeritus

Coming from two generations of ministerial families, Fred Norris carries on his legacy of a lifelong devotion to Christian ministry. He enjoys teaching at Emmanuel, because he can share with students his interests in mission history and theology.

He is presently writing a World Christian Theology that will emphasize Theologians from Africa, Asia, and South and Central America, where 65% of the world's Christians live.

In the fall of 1988, he was the Tuohy Distinguished Visiting Professor of Religious Studies at John Carroll University. He has held Andrew W. Mellon Fellowships at The Catholic University of America and the Vatican Film Library of St. Louis University, and was a Summer Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks. During 1993-1994 he was president of the North American Patristic Society. In 1996, through the support of a Pew Evangelical Scholar Fellowship, he spent the fall term at the Centre for the Study of Christianity in the Non-Church World at Edinburgh University studying Christianity in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In the fall of 2003 he will serve as a Visiting Professor of the History of Christianity at Yale Divinity School.

Before coming to Emmanuel in 1977, Dr. Norris taught at Milligan College and the University of Tübingen. He was on the staff of the Institute for the Study of Christian Origins for five years and was its Director for three years. He has also ministered with churches in Tennessee and Oklahoma.

Dr. Norris and his wife Carol have two adult children and two grandchildren. He is a sports fanatic (as a spectator) and an old movie buff.
