Paul M. Blowers
Dean E. Walker Professor of Church History
Paul Blowers joined
the Emmanuel faculty in 1989. He is currently the Dean E. Walker
Professor of Church History. Educated as a historian of early and
Byzantine Christianity, he has particular interests in the history
of biblical interpretation and in the theological and spiritual
tradition of the Eastern churches. He also teaches courses and
conducts research in the Stone-Campbell heritage.
Dr. Blowers holds the
B.A. magna cum laude from Milligan College, the M.Div. from
Emmanuel, and the M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Notre
Dame, where he was a John O’Brien Fellow. He is a member of the
North American Patristics Society, the American Society of Church
History, the Disciples of Christ Historical Society,
and the
Center for Catholic and Evangelical Theology. He is the
author of Exegesis and Spiritual Pedagogy in Maximus the Confessor
(University of Notre Dame Press, 1991) and of articles in Vigiliae
Christianae, Studia Patristica, Pro Ecclesia, Church History,
Journal of Early Christian Studies, and The Encyclopedia of Early
Christianity. Most recently he has edited and translated The Bible
in Greek Christian Antiquity and is a general editor of the
Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement.
Dr. Blowers has
presented papers for sessions of the International Congress on
Medieval Studies, the Oxford Patristics Conference, the
International Colloquium on Origen of Alexandria, and the American
Academy of Religion. He has been invited to teach courses in early
Christian literature to monks of the Trappist Abbey of New
Clairvaux in Northern California on three separate occasions.
Before coming to
Emmanuel, Paul served an associate ministry in Lafayette, Indiana,
and was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Theology at the
University of Notre Dame. Beyond the classroom, he enjoys travel,
jogging the pleasant Appalachian foothills around his home, and,
most of all, the company of his wife, Sandy, daughter, Leslie, and son,
Colin.
