How to Form a Scholarship
at Emmanuel School of Religion

Making an investment in Christian education

The Dilemma

By the time a student comes to Emmanuel, often the money saved for college education has been spent on undergraduate study. Because Emmanuel is a graduate school, many students come with great financial need. Our students are older. Many are married and have the responsibility of a family with children, cars, and other possessions.

International students come with even greater needs. Immigration laws in the United States limit employment opportunities; thus it is difficult for these students to earn their financial support.

Most Emmanuel students seek employment while in seminary. Some work in secular jobs in the community, others work with area churches, and some are employed in both sectors.

The Solution

The need for financial aid is critical for all of our students. Many colleges encourage students to secure financial aid in the form of loans with low interest rates. Payment of these loans is not required until after graduation. Emmanuel’s concern is that large loan payments are due after graduation when our graduates are entering into their ministries. Ministry is not normally characterized by salaries substantial enough to sustain much heavy debt. We do not want our graduates dropping out of the ministry because of financial pressures. Therefore, we endeavor to respond with adequate tuition scholarship assistance.

Types of Scholarships

Annually Funded Scholarships

Annually funded scholarships are contributed each year by individuals or churches. The amount donated equals the cost of tuition for the year. The amount of money contributed is the amount of the scholarship awarded to the needy, qualified student.

Endowed Scholarships

Endowed scholarships are permanent funds. Only the income generated by the fund is awarded annually as a scholarship. A committee established by the Emmanuel Board of Trustees oversees the investment of the funds in a reasonable and prudent manner, and at all times complies with the Uniform Management of Institutional Funds Act of 1973. The terms and definitions of this Act govern the authority of Emmanuel to make investments and spend funds. All of the endowment funds of Emmanuel are managed by a national brokerage firm.

The Funding of a Scholarship

The amount of funding necessary to underwrite a full scholarship will vary with the changing tuition demands of the seminary. Presently, an annually funded full scholarship can be awarded for approximately $7,000-$9,000, depending on the number of hours taken.

The amount of funding necessary for an endowed full scholarship is $60,000. Income generated by the principal amount will fund the annual scholarship distribution. An endowed scholarship is named when the principal amount in the fund reaches a minimum of $5,000 and is awarded the next academic year. Many donors have established a goal of endowing a full scholarship over a period of several years.

All funds may be increased by further gifts. Gifts for a particular scholarship may be given by an individual, group, or church as a means of personal involvement in the preparation of future leaders for the church. The Carver Scholarship was established at Emmanuel by Mr. and Mrs. John Carver, individual donors interested in a well-prepared ministry. The Earl Hanson Fife Scholarship was established by his children in memory of this great church leader. The Bud and Wanda Corey Youth Ministry Scholarship is being funded by family and friends of the Coreys in honor of these longtime church youth leaders. This scholarship is for Emmanuel students preparing for youth ministry. Many of the friends contributing to this scholarship were in the youth groups led by Mr. and Mrs. Corey.

The Name of the Scholarship

Many of the scholarships at Emmanuel have been formed and named to make strong statements about what the donors believe is important in ministerial preparation. For example, Rusty and Jan Thornley, former missionaries to Brazil, have formed the Thornley Mission Scholarship. The Lawson children have funded the Rex and Eileen Lawson Preaching Scholarship. Lowell and Wilma Ellis have formed the Ellis World Mission Scholarship.

Some scholarships carry the name of the donor to demonstrate their personal partnership with the purpose of Emmanuel School of Religion. Other scholarships carry the name of a friend, relative, or Christian leader as a memorial recognizing the person’s commitment to Christ and His church.

Names enrich the future tradition of Emmanuel, a young school establishing a rich and colorful heritage.

The Restrictions of the Scholarship

Because future student financial needs may not be apparent at the present, it is preferred that restrictions be as few as possible. This flexibility will permit future financial aid committees to address needs in the best manner possible. The normal restriction for a scholarship is based on a student’s financial need and academic and ministerial ability.

However, if the donor has interests or concerns that would be better represented by other requirements for eligibility, that is also possible. For example, the scholarship may be restricted to:

students from a particular part of the United States
students from another country
female students
minority students
students going to the mission field
students preparing for youth ministry
students preparing for preaching ministry
or any other group the donor wishes to name.

Once the restrictions are agreed upon, they will be incorporated in a written agreement which will ensure that the wishes of the donor are honored by future leaders of the seminary.
