Emmanuel Offers Tuition Waivers for Spouses of Full-Time Students

In October 1999, the Trustees of Emmanuel School of Religion approved a landmark program with the purpose of involving both husband and wife in preparation for ministry: Providing full scholarships for spouses of all full-time masters degree students. Dean Eleanor A. Daniel said that the program will emphasize Emmanuel’s understanding of ministry as a team effort, adding, “Our concern is that the spouse also be prepared to render ministry.”

These scholarships enable spouses of full-time students to study toward the M.A.R. or M.Div. degree at Emmanuel, regardless of the courses their spouse is taking.

This program was launched at the beginning of the Spring 2000 semester.  Several couples have already taken advantage of it, including Brian and Betsy Carter (above), who came to Emmanuel last fall from Great Lakes Christian College. Said Betsy,

“God is the true Provider. He has proven it throughout my life in every way, from blessing me with a husband who desires to serve God as a married team, to bringing us to Emmanuel where we can get the education needed to strengthen our service. The tuition waver program is another blessing from God, allowing both of us to get the same education, making us a powerful team to further the Kingdom. Through this scholarship, God has provided a way for Brian and me to become the ministry team that we desire to be.”

POLICY FOR
SPOUSE TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS

1. The spouse (male or female) of any full-time student is eligible to receive a full tuition scholarship for courses taken during fall or spring semesters. This includes audit, credit, and credit toward a degree. The spouse must pay all applicable fees.

2. The scholarship does not apply to January Intersession and Summer Session classes.

3. Either the husband or the wife, usually the one taking the greater number of hours, will be identified as the “primary student,” the other as the student eligible for a Spouse Tuition Scholarship.

4. Upon the graduation of the “primary student,” the spouse will no longer be eligible for the Spouse Tuition Scholarship. However, the spouse may at that time apply for other grants that may be available.

5. If the “primary student” drops to part-time status, the spouse is no longer eligible for the spouse scholarship.

6. If the spouse drops a class, the policies for repayment of the scholarship apply. These policies are outlined in the Financial Aid Handbook available from the Emmanuel Business Office.

7. Spouses who choose to enter into a degree program must go through the normal Application for Admission process.
