Jobs
There are many employment opportunities for students in Northeast
Tennessee. Some students do quite well financially. Most must be
good managers of both time and money.
You will likely learn
something about living sacrificially for the Kingdom. But then, that
is our calling.
The following
information may be of benefit to you as you contemplate your move to
Emmanuel.
Church
employment
There are approximately 200 Christian Churches/Churches of Christ
within a 2-hour drive of Emmanuel. Many of these congregations
offer opportunities for employment for our students.
Salaries will vary
according to the size of the congregation and the demands placed on
the minister. Some area churches offer parsonages.
Since it may take
several months to gain this kind of employment, we recommend that
you be willing to work in a “secular ministry” while seeking a
“church ministry.”
Most of our students
who have ministerial experience can anticipate finding church
employment within the first three to six months of living in
Northeast Tennessee.
We provide a list of
ministry openings and assistance in the preparation of a résumé
and cover letter.
Secular
employment
Emmanuel students find employment in the cities of Johnson City and
Elizabethton and in the counties of Carter and Washington. In these
two cities and counties there are more than 2,356 businesses
(industry, manufacturing and retail), 47 public schools, 425
physicians and dentists, many motels and restaurants, and a variety
of other sources for employment.
Working conditions and
wage scales will vary depending on the talents, abilities, and work
experience of the applicant. Wages and the cost of living are lower
in our area than in most metropolitan areas.
Employment
of spouse
Spouses of Emmanuel students find many different types of employment
in the Emmanuel area. Some work in school systems; some
at East Tennessee State University. Others work as secretaries,
dieticians, accountants, bank tellers, nurses, dorm parents at
Milligan College, clerks, church organists, social workers, waiters
and waitresses, cooks, etc.
There are many licensed
day care centers in this area. Costs range from $100 to $120 per child
per week.

What
we do to help
The Assistant in Admissions is responsible for helping
incoming students find housing and
jobs. A list of housing
possibilities is updated regularly and from this list we will try to
have two or three places for you to consider when you arrive.
The
Emmanuel Village
The Emmanuel Village, Emmanuel’s student housing complex,
presently consists of 38 two-bedroom cottages and four three-bedroom
cottages. These spacious apartments (1,100 sq ft) rent for $420 per
month for families, or $210 each for two single students sharing one
apartment. The apartments feature central heat and air
conditioning, as well as washer and dryer hookups. Wireless internet
is now available and included in your rent. These townhouse
cottages are built in quadraplexes and are located on eight acres
adjacent to Emmanuel’s main campus. To be placed on the waiting
list, contact the Business Office (call 1-800-933-3771 or email
Debbie Morton).
A $100 reservation deposit is required.
Off-campus
housing
There is abundant housing within easy driving distance of Emmanuel’s
campus, especially during the first eight to ten weeks of summer. In
late summer housing is a little more difficult to secure.
It may be wise to plan
on moving into temporary housing and then take your time in locating
more “permanent” housing. This would allow time to get better
acquainted with our community before making a final decision on “where
we will live.”
Variety. There
are many apartments for rent less than one mile from our campus
offering a variety of choices and prices. Emmanuel owns seven
apartments that rent for $275 per month. Milligan College rents
two-bedroom apartments, open to Emmanuel students on a
space-available basis, for $325 per month.
Other options include
duplexes and single family dwellings as well as efficiency
apartments. Some students are involved in bed and board arrangements
with area residents.
Cost.
A one-bedroom apartment in the Emmanuel community will rent for $275
to $350 per month (exclusive of utilities). Two-bedroom apartments
or trailers are available for $350 to $450 per month. Rental houses
are more expensive and less available than are apartments. Pets are
usually not permitted.
A deposit of one month’s
rent and a cleaning deposit are usually required. References from
previous landlords may be helpful.

What
we need from you
How
will I pay?
Financial
Aid: The purpose
“Where there is a will, there is a way,” so goes the saying. We
believe if you have the will to earn an Emmanuel degree, we can help
you find a way to get it done. Sacrifice will likely be involved. We
are willing to share the financial burden by making financial
assistance available to
qualified students.
The amount of financial
aid is determined by several factors: (1) academic performance, (2)
demonstrated financial need, and (3) availability of funds.
The
program
Emmanuel School of Religion’s Financial Aid Program consists of
several types of financial assistance:
-
Scholarships
are available to applicants who excel in academic and
leadership performance. For a list of scholarships offered by
Emmanuel, qualifications and conditions, go to
scholarships.
-
College
work-study: A small amount of aid is available to
Emmanuel students through government work-study programs and
school-funded programs.
-
Government
loan funds: Emmanuel has been certified by the
Department of Education for participation in the Stafford
Guaranteed Student Loan Program.
-
School
loan funds: Emmanuel manages a number of small loan
funds to assist students with temporary needs or emergency
situations. The Timothy Fund provides small grants for such
purposes.

assistance or for Federal loans:
